2G SUNSETTING: Switching off the 2G Network

Impact of 2G Switching off on Intercoms
If you are in the market for an intercom, it is important to make an informed choice to ensure it will function past 2025. In the UK, two of the three service providers for the 2G network, EE and Vodaphone, have announced that they will switch off their 2G networks in 2025. This will affect intercoms that are designed to work only with 2G technology, as they will not be compatible with EE and Vodaphone after 2025. Older SIM cards that are 2G only will also need to be upgraded.
Controversy Over Smart Meter Rollout
One controversial aspect of the 2G sunsetting is the government’s smart meter rollout program. These meters are currently installed in 50% of homes and businesses in the UK, and they transmit data using 2G technology. Some emergency services and National lottery machines also use 2G technology. While there are plans to use separate frequencies for these services, these frequencies will not be available for private mobile networks.
Recommendations for Intercoms
We do not recommend purchasing 2G intercoms as they may not work after 2025 unless you are in range of a 2G o2 mast. Instead, we recommend looking for intercoms with 4G in the title. At Arden Gates, we offer 4G/LTE (Long-Term Evolution) intercoms from Telguard, which have a better frequency and more efficient and reliable service than the old 2G units. Our 4G units and SIM cards will also work on 2G if the signal is stronger, automatically switching to the strongest signal. We also offer both 2G and 4G intercoms from AES and Videx, but now recommend the 4G versions. If staying with GSM intercoms is best option for you, here is our top 5 GSM intercom kits.
Alternatives to GSM Intercoms
Another reliable alternative to GSM intercoms is IP intercoms from Doorbird, which connect to your broadband router and allow you to talk to visitors at the gate and let them in from anywhere with a good Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection. Doorbird is a leading company in this sector and we have found their intercoms to be the most straightforward and reliable units to work with.
LTE vs. GSM Intercoms
While intercoms are generally referred to as GSM intercoms, 4G and 5G are actually LTE. LTE signals are stronger, simpler, and overall provide a better experience for users. You can use LTE anywhere that has a signal, for both calls and data. At Arden Gates, we strive to offer high-quality products at competitive prices and will always seek new solutions for your entry and access control needs.
